Idiopathic Fibromyalgia General Discussion

An increasing amount of research suggests that environmental toxins, especially heavy metal toxins, may either trigger or exacerbate the debilitating symptoms of Fibromyalgia and associated Musculoskeletal Pains. Studies have shown 47 to 67% of fibromyalgia patents reported an increase in symptoms after a known exposure to environmental toxins. To make matters worse, these toxins can increase the amount of time the body’s pain receptors fire, which is how pain thresholds are felt and measured by patients. This in turn increases the sensitivity of the central nervous system’s pain response, making the entire process self perpetuating. Exposure to heavy metals, especially lead, increases inflammatory and immune system responses and also has toxic effects on the nervous system, adding insult to injury. Any form or cause of Fibromyalgia can be made worse with heavy metal toxicity.

If this is either a cause or exacerbation of an individual’s Fibromyalgia, then the following should be considered.

Cervical Trauma Induced Fibromyalgia

Cervical Trauma Induced Fibromyalgia occurs after a significant, sudden impact has occurred to either the head or neck. The physical impact imparts damages to both the brain stem and the cervical spinal cord, which is NOT demonstrable on any MRI studies, unless such trauma resulted in gross physical damages. Non-the -less, microscopic damages have occurred. Studies show the efficacy of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) in treating these patients. FSM is the ONLY therapy of which I am aware, which can adequately address these damages and improve patient outcome.

Cervical Trauma is most often a result of car accidents, but can also occur when walking into a hanging flower pot, falling off a ladder, getting hit in the head in football and other sports, falling off a bike, etc.

Statistics:

  • Fibromyalgia is 13.3 times more common following cervical injuries. 24 to 50% of Cervical Trauma Patients develop future Fibromyalgia
  • 2 million patients with a history of cervical trauma have developed “Cervical Trauma Induced Fibromyalgia”

Classic Pain Pattern:

  • Neck, shoulder, midscapular
  • Back, arms, legs
  • Hands and feet

Pain Features:

  • Average pain is 7.3 (+/- 1.2) on a typical 1-10 pain threshold scale with “10″ being the greatest pain
  • Pain is resistant to use of any narcotics
  • Quality is: Aching, burning, tingling, stabbing

Patient Exam:

  • Patient has hyperactive patellar reflexes
  • Hyperesthesia (abnormal increase in sensitivity to stimuli)

Studies Showing Efficacy of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) treatment, by measuring Cytokines.
Cytokines are inflammation pain generators.
Testing was performed after three 90-minute treatment sessions using FSM.

  • IL-1 (Interleukin-1): Reduced from 330 (+/- 39) to 80 (+/- 31)
  • TNF-alpha: Reduced from 305 (+/- 36) to 78 (+/- 35)
  • IL-6 (Interleukin-6): Reduced from 239 (+/- 23) to 76 (+/- 38)
  • Substance P: Reduced from 180 (+/- 31) to 54 (+/- 28)

Studies Showing Efficacy of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) treatment, by measuring Beta Endorphins.
Beta Endorphins are natural analgesics the body produces to numb or dull pains. Beta Endorphins have approximately 80 times the analgesic potency of morphine.

  • Beta Endorphins: Increased from 8.2 (+/- 2.5) to 71.1 (+/- 9.3)

Studies Showing Efficacy of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) treatment, by measuring Cortisol.
Cortisol increases follow increases in Beta Endorphins.

  • Cortisol: Increased from 14.7 (+/- 1.2) to 105 (+/- 1.2)

Studies Showing Efficacy of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) treatment, by measuring Pain.

  • Pain: Decreased from 7.3 out of 10 (+/- 1.2) to 1.3 out of 10 (+/- 1.1)

Conclusions of Efficacy of Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) treatment for Cervical Trauma Induced Fibromyalgia.
Test group consisted of 54 consecutive patients with a history of Cervical Trauma.

  • All patients experienced pain relief
  • 58% (31 of the 54) experienced resolution of their fibromyalgia within 4 months
  • 13 of the 54 discontinued treatment

Expanding Theories, Other Potential Causes of Fibromyalgia

The fibromyalgia syndromes, myofascial pain syndromes, and fibromyositis, are a group of disorders characterized by achy pain and stiffness in soft tissues, including muscles, tendons (which attach the muscles to the bones), and ligaments (which attach bones to other bones).

The pain and stiffness of fibromyalgia may occur throughout the body or may be restricted to certain locations. If there are more than 12 trigger point locations, the syndrome is classified as Fibromyalgia. If there are fewer than 12 trigger point locations, then it is classified as Myofascial Pain Syndrome. Fibromyalgia throughout the body is more common in women. Men are more likely to develop myofascial pain in a particular area such as the shoulders from an occupation or recreational muscle strain.

Causes? Most textbooks state the cause is unknown. I have my own theories:

I believe the primary cause for painful trigger points is “metastatic calcium” (calcium deposited into areas where it should not be deposited); into soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, and/or ligaments. Calcium causes muscle contraction when deposited into muscle tissue, and/or forms a non-pliable nodule inside muscle fibers. When deposited into tendons and ligaments, calcium forms a “non-pliable” mass which prevents these tissues from stretching, then returning back to normal. Tendons and ligaments all should have a certain amount of “give” or “elasticity.” If a mass of calcium has created a non-pliable nodule somewhere within tendons and ligaments, when these tissues need to “stretch” a little in response to muscle contraction, part of the tendon and ligament tissue will not flex, causing the remaining parts to over-flex, resulting in “hot” trigger points of pain.

Chronically contracted muscles from too much calcium, as well as calcium laden nodules, cannot receive proper blood flow and therefore will not receive the proper amounts of needed oxygen. The tissues then become hypoxic (less than normal amounts of oxygen in the tissues and/or no oxygen.) Hypoxic tissues contract further and set the calcium more permanently within these soft tissues. The more the muscle, tendon, or ligament is contracted or “locked”, the greater the amount of corresponding painful trigger points.

A common cause is due to injuries. This is commonly seen in men with myofascial pain syndrome, especially in the shoulder area from occupational work.

Another mechanism is due to the kidney losing its ability to remove Phosphorus. Extra Phosphorus builds up in tissues which lower tissue pH. Tissues pull in calcium to raise pH back to normal levels. The extra calcium remains and becomes “metastatic calcium.”

Treatment Theories

Using my theories, I have successfully treated many patients with either fibromyalgia and/or myofascial pain syndrome using a technology called Frequency Specific Microcurrent, of which I have been specializing in since 1997. I design my own Microcurrent treatments so muscle spasm is decreased and oxygen levels in the tissues are increased.

Malic Acid has been used to help profuse soft tissues with oxygen and has demonstrated success in these syndromes. This natural substance is found in one manufacturer’s fibromyalgia support formula. This particular manufacturer sells only to doctors. You must purchase this supplement through a doctor with a valid license to practice medicine. The name of the company is Metagenics and the name of the product is Fibroplex.

Educational Suggestions:
1) Fibroplex: 2 tablets BID, best if between meals but not critical

Treatment to be used in conjunction with Fibroplex:
1) Frequency Specific Microcurrent has been used successfully when treating patients for both Fibromyalgia as Myofascial Pain syndromes. This therapy must be administered under the supervision of a physician.
